Inside the DMV Impact Scene
From coworking labs to Capitol lounges, the DMV is quickly becoming a test bed for civic innovation.
With lawmakers coming together to end the federal government’s longest shutdown in our nation’s history, life in Washington, D.C. is slowly returning to normal. But while the halls of Congress reopen, another side of the capital has been open all along. Across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, young founders are blending entrepreneurship with social purpose, proving that impact is the region’s fastest-growing industry.
From coworking labs to Capitol lounges, the DMV is becoming a test bed for civic innovation. Here’s a look at the people, spaces, and ideas shaping the capital’s next generation of changemakers.
Spotlight: Founders Reimagining Impact
1. The Halcyon Model: Purpose as Prototype
Halcyon’s Georgetown incubator has become a local anchor for social entrepreneurs across climate, equity tech, and civic innovation. In 2025, Halcyon launched its DMV Climate Innovation Fellowship, bringing in regional founders to build climate solutions across DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
“We like to joke at Halcyon that one of our values is being nimble and taking risks.” - Mercy Erhiawarien, Senior Manager of Intensives on supporting fellows through volatile policy environments.
Halcyon also runs its EquityTech Fellowship, supporting ventures that close gaps in education, workforce access, and financial inclusion.
2. The 1776 Hub: Civic Tech Gets a Rebrand
1776 remains one of the major startup hubs in the region, with programming and networks that bridge tech and public service.
3. PeaceTech Lab: Data for Peacebuilding
PeaceTech Lab (spun out of the U.S. Institute of Peace) continues its mission at the nexus of technology and conflict resolution. It launched the PeaceTech Accelerator in D.C. in 2017 in partnership with C5 Capital, AWS, and SAP, a flagship program for startups building tools for peace, civic safety, and conflict de-escalation.

Why It Matters
The DMV is more than a policy hub. It’s a living ecosystem of collaboration, where civic innovators share co-working tables with policymakers, and mission-driven startups shape the city’s next economic chapter.
